A Monastic School says.... "Thank you!"
Our local team was happy to have the opportunity to visit a monastic school run by a group of nuns. Here, they were able to distribute aid in the form of rice and other necessities, which will be well appreciated by the children who attend this school. This nunnery was another fortunate recipient of the Birthday Fund, in which a British donor instructed all his close friends and family to support Better Burma’s mission to provide food in poor regions of Myanmar. We are so touched by his gratitude and how many people have now benefited as a result!
Nunneries in Myanmar often support monastic schools, which are made up of poor children and orphans who receive room, board, and education. The schools are designed to provide a basic education in Buddhist scripture and meditation, as well as classes on a variety of secular subjects as well, often taught by volunteers in the community or the nuns, themselves.
As for the students, they are typically from families who cannot afford to send them to regular schools. The schools are typically run by nuns, who rely on donations from the local community to cover the costs of food and supplies.
The education and training that the children receive in these schools is often seen as a valuable asset by families and communities, but with the poor economy caused by the military coup, it has been harder and harder to keep them going. This is also why we are so grateful for those donors who have continued to give, and no contribution is too small!
Despite the challenges, the schools continue to play an important role in the lives of many children in Myanmar. For many of them, the schools provide a rare opportunity to receive an education and to learn about a different way of life.
