A Community Under Attack
Phegon Township is located in Southern Shan State and, in more peaceful times, gained a reputation among tourists and birdwatchers. However, in recent times, it has become a burning city on the mountain due to the ongoing conflict in the region. As a result, more than 4,000 people have been displaced, and they are forced to live in many camps as the military council continues to bombard the area with airplanes.
The situation for those fleeing the war has become increasingly difficult as the offensives intensified before the rains. The growing number of people displaced by the attacks are in dire need of food, and thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors, Better Burma was able to step in to help! We provided a large supply of rice and oil, but more is needed.
However, the problems continued, as our local team was in the process of providing these goods when the military’s fighter jets bombed Song Phae Village Hospital in the West Kayan region, causing injuries and damaging the hospital. This was not an isolated incident, as the military council has bombarded Song Pye Hospital with planes five times already. Until recently, a doctor and five other people, including a teacher, were injured in the attacks.
Given the urgent need for medical supplies, we had to suddenly allocate some of this fund to instead urgency acquire emergency medicines for the hospital, while the other half was used for food
The situation in Phegon Township remains dire, and the displaced people are in urgent need of aid. Better Burma is continuing its efforts to provide relief to those affected by the conflict, and any further support is greatly appreciated.
