Operation Defection

Better Burma strives to aid a group of defected soldiers and their companions in coordinating a campaign that urges fellow military members to refrain from engaging in any additional acts of violence towards civilians, transition away from the Burmese military, and actively join the democracy movement. If you wish to support their detailed projects below, kindly consider contributing any amount!

“The Media Outreach program aims to reach out to soldiers within the Myanmar military who are considering defection and provide them with vital information and support. Through various activities, including the creation of investigative social media content, fact-checking and combating fake news, and the organization of regular forums, we aim to empower armed organizations including Myanmar army and other armed groups with knowledge, amplify their voices, and create a platform for open dialogue. By sharing the experiences of former soldiers who got involved in the civil disobedience movement-CDM and their families, we seek to expose the control mechanisms of the Myanmar Army and inspire others to join the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) for democracy. Through these efforts, we hope to contribute to the ongoing shift in loyalty among military personnel and accelerate the movement towards a democratic Myanmar.

In light of the dire circumstances arising from the oppressive actions of the Myanmar junta, particularly targeting the family members of CDM soldiers, many individuals have been compelled to flee and seek refuge in Mae Sot. Unfortunately, upon their arrival, they find themselves in a state of despair and abandonment, as they are left without support or assistance. These individuals had willingly participated in acts of disobedience against the military dictatorship, yet they are left feeling hopeless and helpless.

Understanding the challenges faced by these women and children, who are directly affected by the actions of the military forces, we are committed to ensuring their safety by providing temporary shelter. To achieve this, we will rent two houses to serve as safe places for these individuals. This initiative aims to offer a shine of hope and encouragement in the face of adversity. We wish to extend this assistance for a duration of three months, ensuring that at least four families, including their family members, will benefit from the temporary safe shelters. As a result, we hope to be able to provide emergency accommodation for up to 16 families over the course of one year.

The Supporting Females and The Children program recognizes the challenges faced by the families of CDM soldiers who have shifted their allegiance to the people's side in the fight for democracy. This program aims to alleviate their difficulties and ensure their well-being through targeted support. By providing monthly financial assistance to wives and children, offering access to medical care through M-Fund cards, supporting educational needs, and distributing food and basic necessities, we aim to address their immediate needs and foster a sense of stability and security. In doing so, we acknowledge the sacrifices made by these families and strive to provide them with the necessary resources to overcome their challenges. Through this program, we hope to contribute to the overall well-being and resilience of the CDM soldiers' families, empowering them to continue their support for democracy in Myanmar.”
