Beneath the Rising Waters: Myanmar's Silent Cry for Help in a Post-Coup World

One of the local groups that we support has also sent this critical update about the flooding that is occurring throughout the Bago region. Along with his text, he included a number of images that show how serious the issue has become. As these vulnerable communities cannot expect support from any state authority, which as we all know is causing more harm than helping, we turn to our generous donor community to humbly request any contribution of any size to support them at this time.

Myanmar has recently been hit hard by severe flooding, which has caused widespread devastation in the regions of Patheingyi near Mandalay and Bago. These floods have had a profound impact on local communities, particularly affecting urban and suburban areas, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The Samanera University Monastery in Patheingyi, in particular, experienced the brunt of the flooding. The ground floor of the monastery's three-story building, which houses the novices, was entirely submerged by floodwaters, and the facility is grappling with the resulting water damage. This situation has not only disrupted the lives of the novices but also placed the monastery in a precarious state, necessitating urgent attention and support.

Meanwhile, Bago has also been severely affected by this natural disaster. The combination of heavy rainfall and the rising water levels of the Bago River have led to extensive flooding in the city proper. The Zalattaw and Mazin Reservoirs, located upstream from the city, were above full capacity and  were spilling over uncontrollably, contributing to the flooding crisis. The consequences of this disaster have been devastating for local residents, and especially dire for the underprivileged families residing in suburban and urban areas, as they face acute food shortages and are in desperate need of assistance.  Local monasteries, including the renowned Samane Kyaw, have all been adversely impacted by the flooding as well.

In an ideal situation, local authorities would play a crucial role in providing support and relief to these vulnerable populations. However, the current political situation in Myanmar following the coup has left the state without the necessary resources and infrastructure. As a result, these communities are left to fend for themselves, making the need for external assistance all the more critical. Your donations will help fill this void and offer a lifeline to those who find themselves in dire circumstances due to the lack of state support. The power of collective compassion and assistance is needed to help these communities recover from this natural disaster.
