About Letters, Forest Fires, Small Birds, and Drops of Water
The following letter was written by Czech human rights activist Igor Blazevic, about the monumental decision just announced from Total and Chevron. It should also be worth noting that the Czech government is the first in the world to accept the legitimacy of the National Unity Government (NUG), and we hope others will soon follow suit.
Dear friends,
Let me express gratitude for joining me in sending letters to Chairman and CEO of the TOTAL. You have probably already noticed good news from yesterday.
Total has announced that it suspends gas-linked cash payments to Myanmar army. It still needs to be carefully analyzed what exactly this announcement and decision means. There has been several streams of payments going from Total and Chevron to entities linked with Myanmar military. But still, this is important victory. Not insignificant amount of money will now not finish into junta’s hands. As important is the announcement itself. The message that is going toward people who are in shadow structures of Myanmar army and of Myanmar crony and military captured economy.
This message is that the TIDE is TURNING.
TOTAL, of course, did not make that decision because of our letters. This was mainly achieved by the heroic people of Myanmar. Their incredible, fascinating courage, tier determination, their resilience, their mutual solidarity is what is turning the tide.
In addition, the big thank you goes to colleagues from Justice for Myanmar. Their persistent and disciplined work on analyzing and exposing leaked data about shadowy economic deals with international investors is what has really made serious impact. La Monde also contributed a lot by making a big story about Total’s extraordinary profits from gas pipelines. Justice for Myanmar and La Monde has shown why highly professional and patient investigative watchdog teams are so preciously important and also why we need good, credible, high-quality media.
However, our letters mattered on another level. Let me, repeat the story about small bird and forest fire, to explain what level I have in mind. Story is also a small gift from me to you, as expression of true gratitude for joining me in sending litters. I have discovered the story in one Buddhist children book when I was reading to my, at that time, 5 years old Sara. Story goes like this:
Big fire started in forest. All animals, big and small, started to escape, to save lives from fire. Except one small bird. She started to run to small pond of water and drop-by-drop tried to extinguish big fire. Other fleeing animals yelled at the small bird:
“You crazy one, what you are doing. Run, run. Save your life!!!”
The small bird responded: “If you do not want to help me, let me do what is my duty”.
And she continued her fruitless effort.
Gods on the heaven have noticed what the small bird is doing. So they sent God’s messenger to warn the small bird:
“Go, run away. You cannot stop the fire. You are too small. Fire is too big. Better, run. Save your life”, that was what messenger from Heavens said to the small bird.
She responded in the same way: “If you do not want to help me, do not take my time, let me do what is my duty”. And she continued her fruitless effort, drop-by-drop.
So the messenger returned to Heavens that the small bird is too determined.
Gods deliberated for a while longer, what to do, and finally they decided, moved by the determination of the small bird, to send the rain. The rain extinguished the fire. Forest have been saved.
The small bird become symbolic and beloved creature in Buddhist popular mythology and find a way to children books.
Since I discovered that story, I was asking myself, who exactly extinguished the fire? Gods and their rain, or the bird and her small drops? There is not ultimate respond on that questions.
But I started to believe in power and meaningfulness of small drops.
Our letters have maybe been similar small drops. Maybe not. We do not know and we do not have a way to find out did our drops mattered. But exactly because we do not know, because they might have mattered, the leap of faith in miracle and power of small drops is what is, I think, better choice than resignation in a situation when we or people whom we love face big fires.

တိုတယ်ဥက္ကဌ နှင့် CEO ထံ စာများရေးသားပေးပို့ခြင်းအတွက် ကျေးဇူးတင်ကြောင်းဖေါ်ပြပါရစေ။ တိုတယ်မှမနေ့ကထုတ်ပြန်ချက် သတင်းကောင်းကိုလည်းကြားသိပြီး ဖြစ်လောက်ပါသည်။
မြန်မာအစိုးရသို့ ပေးသွင်းနေသော သဘာဝဓါတ်ငွေ့ဆိုင်ရာ အခွန်အခများကို ရပ်ဆိုင်းတော့မည်ဟု တိုတယ်ကုမ္ပဏီက ကြေငြာခဲ့သည်။
တိုတယ်၏ ဆုံးဖြတ်ကြေငြာချက် ဆိုလိုရင်းကို ဂရုတစိုက် အကဲဖြတ်ရန် လိုအပ်နေပါသည်။ တိုတယ်နှင့် ရှက်ဖရွန်မှ မြန်မာစစ်တပ်နှင့် ဆက်စပ်နေသော နေရာဌာနများဆီသို့ လမ်းကြောင်း အမျိုးမျိုးဖြင့် အခကြေးငွေ ပေးနေပါသည်။ သို့တိုင် ယခုအောင်ပွဲမှာ အရေးကြီးသော အောင်ပွဲဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ယခုအခါ သေးသေးကွေးကွေးမဟုတ်သော ငွေပမာဏ တရပ်စစ်အာဏာရှင် လက်ထဲ မရောက်တော့ပါ။ အရေးကြီးသည်မှာ တိုတယ်၏ ကြေငြာချက်ပင်ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ကြေငြာချက်မှ သတင်းစကားများသည် စစ်တပ်၊ ခရိုနီနှင့် စစ်တပ်ကထိန်းချုပ်ထားသော စီးပွါရေးစနစ် နောက်ကွယ်အဖွဲ့အစည်းထဲမှ လူများဆီသို့ သွားပါသည်။
ထိုအရေးကြီးလှသော တိုတယ်၏ သတင်းစကားမှာ ရေစီးကြောင်းပြောင်းလဲပြီ ဟူ၍ ဖြစ်ပါသည်။
ပေးစာများကြောင့် တိုတယ်မှ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့သည်တော့မဟုတ်ပါ။ ယခုအောင်မြင်မှုသည် သူရဲကောင်း မြန်မာတို့ကြောင့်သာ ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ရေစီးကိုပြောင်းစေခဲ့သည်မှာ မြန်မာပြည်သူတို့၏ အံမခန်းသတ္တိ၊ သံဓိဌာန်၊ ကြံ့ကြံ့ခံမှု၊ညီညွတ်မှုတို့ဖြစ်ပါသည်။
ကျေးဇူးကြီးကြီးတင်ရမည့်သူမှာ Justice for Myanmar မှ မိတ်ဆွေများဖြစ်ပါသည်။ သူတို့၏ စည်းစနစ်ကျ၍ ဇွဲကြီးသောာ အကဲဖြတ်ဆန်းစစ်ချက်များက နိုင်ငံတကာ ရင်းနှီးမြှုပ်နှံသူများ၏ နောက်ကွယ်မှ သက်ရောက်မှုကြီးသော အပေးအယူများကို ထုတ်ဖေါ်ပေးပါသည်။ သဘာဝဓါတ်ငွေ့ပိုက်လိုင်းမှ လန့်စရာပမာဏဖြင့်အကျိုးအမြတ်ရနေသော တိုတယ်ကုမ္ပဏီအကြောင်းရေးသားပေးသည့် ပြင်သစ် သတင်းစာ La Monde ၏အထောက်အကူလည်း များစွာပါ ပါသည်။ Justice for Myanmar နှင့် La Monde သတင်းစာတို့က ကျွမ်းကျင်စိတ်ရှည်သော စုံစမ်းဖေါ်ထုတ်မှု၏ တန်ဖိုးကြီးပုံနှင့် အရေးအသွေးမြင့် မီဒီအဘယ်ကြောင့်လိုအပ်လှသည်ကို ဖေါ်ပြနေပါသည်။
သို့ရာတွင် ပေးစာများကလည်း အနေအထားတရပ်ဖြင့် ခရီးရောက်ပါသည်။ စိတ်ထဲတွင်ပေါ်လာသော တောမီးငြိမ်းရန်ကြိုးစားသည့် ငှက်ကလေးပုံပြင်ကို ကျေးဇူးလက်ဆောင် အဖြစ် ထပ်ပြောပါရစေ။ ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာ ပုံပြင်များဖေါ်ပြသော ကလေးစာအုပ်မှ ထိုပုံပြင်ကို သမီးဆာရာ ၅ နှစ်အရွယ်က ဖတ်ပြခဲ့ဘူးပါသည်။ ပုံပြင်မှာ ဤသို့ဖြစ်သည်။
တောမီးအကြီးအကျယ် လောင်သောအခါ တောနေသတ္တဝါ အကြီးအသေးအားလုံးတို့ ထွက်ပြေးကြပါသည်။ ချွင်းချက်အနေနှင့် ဌက်ငယ်တကောင်ကတော့ အနီးရှိရေကန်ငယ်မှ ရသလောက်ရေဖြင့် မီးငြိမ်းသတ်ရန်ကြိုးပမ်းနေပါသည်။
ပြေလွှားနေသောအခြားသတ္တဝါများက “ဒီလောက်မီးကြီးကို မင်းဘယ်လိုငြိမ်းမှာလဲ၊ လွတ်အောင်ပြေးပါ အရူးရာ” ဟုပြောကြသည်။ “မင်းတို့မကူညီလဲ ငါ့ဘာသာလုပ်မယ်” ဟု ငှက်ငယ်ကပြောက ဆက်၍ မီးငြိမ်းနေခဲ့သည်။
ထိုသို့သော အကျိုးမဲ့ အလုပ်ကို ကောင်းကင်ဘုံမှ နတ်များက မြင်သောအခါ နတ်တမန်စေလွှတ်၍ အကျိုးမဲ့အလုပ်မလုပ်ရန် တားမြစ်ပြန်သည်။ ငှက်ငယ်ကမူ “ မကူရင်လည်းနေပါ။ ငါ့ဘာသာဆက်လုပ်မယ်” ဟုဆိုကာ မီးဆက်ငြိမ်းနေသည်။
ဇွဲကြီးလှသည့် ငှက်ငယ်အကြောင်းကို နတ်တမန်ထံမှကြားရသောအခါ နတ်မင်းကြီးများသည် အချိန်ယူစဉ်းစားကြရသည်။ ငှက်ငယ်၏ ဇွဲသန်ခိုင်မာမှု တွန်းအားဖြင့် နတ်များသည် မိုးရွာချကာ မီးငြိမ်းပေးလိုက်သည်။ သစ်တောလည်း ဘေးကင်းသက်သာရာ ရခဲ့သည်။ ငှက်ငယ်သည် သက်ေတ နမူနာပုံရိပ်အဖြစ် ဗုဒ္ဓစာပေမှသည် ကလေးစာအုပ်ထဲရောက်လာခဲ့ပါသည်။
ထိုပုံပြင်ကို ကြားသည်မှစ၍ မည်သည့်အရာက မီးငြိမ်းပေးခဲ့သနည်းဟူသော မေးခွန်းကို ကျွန်တော့်ကို ကျွန်တော်မေးလေ့ရှိပါသည်။ နတ်မင်းများနှင့် သူတို့၏ မိုးလား။ ငှက်ငယ်နှင့် သူ၏ ရေစက်များလား။ အဆုံးစွန် တိကျသောအဖြေရှိမည်မဟုတ်ပါ။ သို့ရာတွင် အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရှိသော ရေစက်ရေပေါက်ခြေလှမ်းငယ်များ၏ စွမ်းအားကို ယုံကြည်မိပါသည်။
ကျွန်တော်တို့စာများသည်လည်း အလားတူ ရေစက်ငယ်များဖြစ်ပါလိမ့်မည်။ ကျွန်တော်တို့၏ ရေစက်ငယ်များအရာရောက်ခဲ့သလားမသိပါ။ သိနိုင်မည့် အခြေအနေလည်း မရှိပါ။ အရေးကြီးသည်က လုပ်ရပ်ငယ်များ၏စွမ်းအားနှင့် တန်ခိုးကို ယုံကြည်စွာ ခြေလှမ်းရဲခြင်းဟုထင်ပါသည်။ မီးကြီးလောင်နေသော ချစ်ခင်သူများ၏အခြေအနေအပေါ် လက်မှိုင်ချ အရှုံးပေးထားခြင်းထက် ပိုကောင်းသည့် ရွေးချယ်မှုဟုထင်ပါသည်။
ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။
ဇွန်လ ၁၂ ရက်နေ့တွင် NUG နှင့်မြန်မာပြည်သူများကို ထောက်ခံဆန္ဒပြပွဲ ချက်နိုင်ငံပရတ်မြို့တွင် ရှိပါမည်။ပါဝင်၍ ရေတစက်ဖြစ်တည်ပေးကြစေလိုပါသည်။
ဒီတကြိမ်တွင်လည်း အကျိုးရှိသည့် အလုပ်ဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်မည်ပေါ့။
