Rivers Flow Upstream
There is so much happening every day in Myanmar that it’s hard to even follow the stories at ground level. And so as much as we are able to do from this platform, we want to tell these small stories that are so inspiring in the face of terror.
Yesterday, the artist Nu Yin made the following comment: “In times of emergency in the country, rivers should flow upstream if necessary. Very grateful to all Bhante for the food donation for our battle ahead.”
Famous for her portraits of Aung San Suu Kyi, she notes how the usual reciprocal relationship between lays and monastics in traditional Burmese Buddhist society is being upended by those monks caring for the nonviolent protesters. While it is normally the job of lay people to serve the monks food, here is an example of monks taking the street to make sure the protesters are fed.
