When Disaster Strikes, We Must Be Ready

When disaster strikes in Myanmar, there’s no time to wait. Every moment counts for families fleeing violence, children going hungry, or communities devastated by destruction. We’ve seen this urgency time and again in our work, given the scale of conflict that has taken place in the last four years, since the military overthrow the democratically elected government.

Some examples: During the height of the conflict in Kyaukme, families escaped to a monastery in Kyi Kaing Village, seeking safety under the care of a compassionate abbot. With resources stretched to the limit, we stepped in, delivering sacks of rice and dried fish to ensure they wouldn’t go hungry. In another instance, 110 displaced children in a Karenni State camp hadn’t eaten a proper meal in weeks. We supported a local team who undertook a grueling three-day journey over dangerous terrain to bring rice, beans, and meat. For those children, that warm meal wasn’t just food—it was hope. And in Lailenpi last year, when relentless airstrikes forced over 3,000 civilians to flee with nothing, we responded immediately. With our Emergency Fund, we were able to deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies to those who needed them most. These moments of relief weren’t just luck—they were made possible because we were ready— and we were ready only because generous donors who trusted in our mission had made contributions.
