Spicy Chicken, Where It's Least Expected

For our recent donation trip into Insein Prison to support 38 political prisoners, among the vital supplies delivered to political prisoners in Myanmar, one small but powerful gesture stood out: the special treat of spicy fried chicken with chilies.

This meal, a rarity in the harsh, monotonous environment of imprisonment, provided not only nourishment but a much-needed emotional connection to home and normalcy for the prisoners. For individuals enduring extreme isolation, fear, and a lack of basic necessities, the spicy chicken was more than just food—it was a reminder of life outside the prison walls, a taste of freedom that brought comfort and joy to those deprived of both.

In the chaos and trauma of incarceration, simple pleasures like the flavor of familiar food can evoke powerful memories of family, warmth, and belonging. The spicy chicken, with its bold flavors and home-style preparation, allowed the prisoners to momentarily escape the grim reality of their daily lives. One prisoner, overwhelmed with gratitude, shared with our team that the meal "brought back memories of home and family, a taste of normalcy that we dearly miss."
