Launching "Better Tomorrow" in Chin State

Following is an essay written by our Chin partners about their ongoing humanitarian project in Mizoram, India.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the organizers and dedicated individuals involved in the "Better Tomorrow Project" for their remarkable efforts. We also call upon any sympathetic and kind-hearted donors who are willing to give a financial contribution of any amount that can be earmarked for our work.

Before, we described in an essay submission why so many Chin peoples are having to leave their home. Our “Better Tomorrow” project aims to support the vast numbers of refugees who are now seeking shelter and safety in the Siaha District of Mizoram State. Over two years have passed since the brutal military regime staged a coup d'état in Myanmar, plunging the country into a state of chaos and violence. The junta soldiers persistently continue to oppress, imprison, and even kill their opponents while indiscriminately targeting innocent civilians. Consequently, a significant number of Chin people have been compelled to flee their homeland in search of shelter and safety, finding solace in the welcoming arms of Siaha District, Mizoram State.

The geographic proximity between Chin State and Mizoram has played a crucial role in facilitating the influx of Chin refugees. Mizoram shares a porous border with Myanmar, allowing for easier cross-border movement. Additionally, the Mizoram government, civil society organizations, and local communities have extended support to the Chin refugees, providing them with shelter, food, and other essential assistance; even as Indian Prime Minister Modi remains close with the Tatmadaw.

The influx of Chin refugees into Mizoram has not been without challenges. The sudden surge in population has put strains on the resources and infrastructure of the state. It has also presented socio-economic and cultural complexities that require careful management and integration efforts. The Mizoram government, in collaboration with international organizations and local communities, has been working towards addressing these challenges and ensuring the welfare and protection of the refugees, but so far, it has not been enough to respond to the urgent crisis which continues, unabated.

Please stay tuned as we will update you further about the aims and objectives of our upcoming “Better Tomorrow” humanitarian project for the Chin people in Mizoram.
