Fatigue and Disengagement Must Not Hinder Our Support!

As the conflict in Myanmar persists, it is deeply troubling to witness the waning support and attention from the international community, what is perhaps an inevitability for a crisis that has stretched on to two full years. While the atrocities committed by the military continue to mount, the assistance and concern from those beyond Myanmar's borders appears to have dwindled. This is a grave concern for organizations like ours at Better Burma, as our donation fund has largely run dry, leaving us with limited means to support those in need, in addition to funding our overall mission.

It is crucial to recognize that this decrease in attention does not mean that the conflict itself has dissipated. Far from it – in fact, it could be argued that the lack of scrutiny has emboldened the military, known as the Tatmadaw, to employ any means necessary to emerge victorious in this conflict.

The Tatmadaw has long relied on the distraction and eventual disengagement of the international community, knowing that after a few weeks or months of condemnation, they would be able to act with impunity once more. However, this crisis has been different, as the use of social media and the dedication of young activists have kept at least part of the world's focus on the situation in Myanmar for a longer period of time.

Now, however, it is clear that fatigue and disengagement have begun to set in. It is during this vulnerable moment that the Tatmadaw, becoming increasingly desperate and unrestrained, is wreaking havoc on the Burmese people. Airstrikes, village burnings, and attacks on IDP camps have escalated, as have the rape, torture, abduction, and murder of countless individuals.

We are deeply grateful to all past donors for your immeasurable generosity in enabling us to support so many people in need since the coup. However, we implore you not to turn away from the Burmese people at this critical juncture. They are fighting for their freedom and democracy, and they need our support and solidarity. Please consider contributing what you can to help us maintain our mission and stand alongside the Burmese in their pursuit of justice and a brighter future.
