Humanitarian aid to Hpruso, Karenni State
Dear donors, we have delegated part of your donation to support the Karenni people who have been facing such serious deprivations and repeated assaults by the Burmese military. Thank you so much for your generosity, which allows us to support the brave and courageous peoples resisting the violent and corrupt military leadership!
“The Myanmar military has intensified its airstrikes in Karenni state following the junta’s lethal crackdown on peaceful protestors. More than half of Karenni State’s population has been internally displaced since May, 2021. The Myanmar military uses airpower, helicopters, and tanks to destroy homes, wound, and kill civilians. At least 150,000 Karenni civilians have fled their homes in search of safety. Due to the constant attacks in Karenni state; additional 20,000 more of Karenni’s newly displaced civilians have emerged.
Hpruso was a relatively peaceful place compared to the other regions in Karenni - it was where most of the Karenni's IDPs took shelter. However, it was no longer the case until recently. On January 17th, the junta extended into northern Hpruso with the air raids and artillery attacks it has been conducting in Demoso and Loikaw since early January. Hpruso was attacked by fighter jets leaving three people killed, including two children. More civilians were displaced in the western part of Hpruso following the Moso incident and the continuous artillery attacks in nearby areas, with more than 6,000 locals having been forced to flee to the borders of Hpruso.
Thanks to Better Burma, our team successfully provided rice to the displaced families in the Karenni State (Hpruso area). Due to the urgent need in replenishing food supplies, the ground team responded by procuring and distributing rice to the IDP groups taking shelter at the temporary camp located in the South-East region of Hpruso. A total of 45 rice sacks were distributed to a temporary camp which is housing up to 150 IDPs (35 families) at the moment.”
