Better Burma welcomes Giving Tuesday!

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 with a simple but positive message: encouraging people to do good. Over the past ten years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity not only on this special day, but year-round as well. There are official Giving Tuesday national movements in 80 countries, led by a global network of passionate, entrepreneurial leaders. At the grassroots level, people and organizations from every single country in the world participate in Giving Tuesday.

How is Giving Tuesday relevant for Myanmar?

While the conflict throughout the country continues unabated, and even intensifies, and the military’s violence towards its own people increases, many Myanmar-based nonprofits unfortunately report an overall decline in donations. On the one hand, it is not surprising that some kind of “donor fatigue” would eventually set in; it is hard to continue giving generously to an ongoing conflict where the needs never lessen, and there are so many other important causes to consider giving to. On the other hand, the dire need not only remains, but intensifies.  In fact, there are indications that the military has been hoping from the start that the initial burst of engagement and aid from foreign supporters would eventually taper off, allowing them to eventually cement their rule.

For these reasons, we hope that today, Giving Tuesday, can stand out as a plea for support, and a reminder of the struggles that people in Myanmar continue to face as well as the nobility of their aspirations to build a federal democracy with equal rights for all. While we so appreciate all the generosity that donors have shown by your past contributions, we humbly ask that you take a moment on this special day to consider possible avenues for support.

How can I support Better Burma on Giving Tuesday?

If you have the volition to support the Burmese people continuing to resist military tyranny, there are a number of ways you can help. Please keep in mind that every little bit helps, that no contribution is too small!

  • Volunteer your time. We are always in need of reliable volunteers to help us carry out our mission. No matter what your skillset or availability, we would greatly appreciate the support!

  • Purchase Burmese handicrafts for the holidays. We are now working with various artisan communities across Myanmar to offer a range of fair-trade items. These products are 100% made by hand in Myanmar, and their sale benefits not only the vulnerable communities producing them, but also our wider humanitarian projects.

  • Listen and subscribe to Insight Myanmar Podcast. A big part of staying engaged is to be informed! Our podcast program offers interviews with hundreds of diverse guests who have some perspective and experience related to Myanmar.

  • Make a donation. Help us continue to support the urgent humanitarian projects in Myanmar, along with our media and advocacy programs. In addition to our website, you can also make a donation to our Holiday Facebook campaign, in which Facebook has promised to match recurring donations. Or consider the current One Light Global campaign, which will send funds to education and IDP projects. And we ever so greatly appreciate those willing to take a monthly pledge of support, as this can help us to know what funds we can depend on each month.

We thank you for your time and consideration!
