Myanmar-Mongolia relations
Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia. Mongolia is bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south, east, and west. It has a population of over 3 million people, and its capital city is Ulaanbaatar.
Mongolia and Myanmar have a long history of relations. In the 13th century, the Mongol Empire invaded and conquered Myanmar. The Mongol Empire ruled over Myanmar for over a hundred years, until it was defeated by the Siamese in the 15th century.
In the 19th century, both countries were under colonial rule. Myanmar was a colony of Britain, while Mongolia was a colony of Russia. After World War II, both countries gained independence.
In the 21st century, the two countries have developed close relations. In 2014, the two countries signed a military cooperation agreement. In 2015, the two countries held their first ever joint military exercises.
Both countries are members of the United Nations, and both are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Myanmar is also a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), while Mongolia is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
