Enough is Enough!
"When the military coup took place, we all said... 'Enough is enough!' After all, these are the same people who committed crimes against humanity, who engaged in ethnic cleansing against Kachin, Shan, Mon, Karen, Kayah, Rakhine, Rohingya, Chin, you name it... really all of us are the victims of these murderers in Myanmar. So when the military took power like that, the people of Myanmar said, 'It's do or die, because there's no other choice!'"
Powerful words from Dr. Sasa, the former Special Envoy to United Nations, and currently the Union Minister of International Cooperation and Spokesperson of the National Unity Government of Myanmar. In this interview, he discusses the "man-made disaster" of the current pandemic, and how the military is enabling and exacerbating a disastrous third wave of the COVID throughout the country. The situation is so dire that some health experts have predicted a staggering 10-15 million deaths as a result.
Dr. Sasa is now pleading with the international community to enact a "coronavirus ceasefire" on urgent humanitarian grounds. But after six months of inaction beyond continuing to issue statements expounding their "grave concern", the Burmese people wait again to see if any help is on the way.
In the context of this raging health crisis, Dr. Sasa reminds us of the Burmese resilience in facing down a bully that has long tormented every man, woman, and child in the country.
