Emi Grate: "It's gonna be quite a listen."

Emi Grate shared the following reflection with us, shortly following the recording of her interview. We truly thank her for her courage and vulnerability in addressing

“Last night, I recorded an interview with Insight Myanmar Podcast for the upcoming Myanmar Art Auction for humanitarian aid in the ongoing revolution. I went in with the utmost confidence and extreme comfort. However, as soon as the real conversation tarted on the topic of gender—my first person experience of it, as well as my observations on cultural norms—I started panicking. And I had to take a break. As it turns out, I’d never spoken in depth about gender and sexuality in the context of Burmese culture to neither Burmese folks nor non-Burmese folks.

I also touched on looking beyond the fighting days of the revolution, thoroughly reexamining the histories of our country and the world to understand the roots of conflict and avoid them in the future, and doing right by the marginalized and oppressed after we all give up arms. It’s gonna be quite a listen.”
