You. Don't. Need. Anything.
This was only the second interview we released on Insight Myanmar Podcast, but it gave way to the most memorable passage and most quotable line in our young podcast’s history. In the post-interview discussion with Zach, we talked about this very line, and I can’t tell you how many meditator listeners have quoted this line back to me. One even said it made him want to quit his job and join a 90 day retreat! Even more, a handful of guests confided from the outset that they hoped they could pull off such a resonating statement in their own interview (and then admitted that they weren’t able to). And we’re not just talking about the line itself, but the exuberance and joy with which Sayalay Piyadassii says it!
Well, enough on that. Seriously, if you haven’t heard the passage in question, take a moment to hear my interview with her in full.
“You don’t need anything!”
“People don't understand really. You know, in Spain, I spent about three months not even in a cave, on a rock in the mountains, and I was so happy, just to see that you can live like that!
You don't need anything! It's amazing. Nature doesn't do anything to you.
You know, you can live so in harmony and so simple, it just brings happiness to the mind. The simplicity— the more simple conditions, the happier the mind can be. If, of course, you're contented! If you're not, whatever conditions will be, you will not be contented.
I don't see a purpose of really living in a very rich environment, and much comfort. We search for liberation from the suffering because we see the suffering. If we don't have any dukkha and we don't see it, then there is no need to do anything…”
