An Elderly Snail

This is a pretty straightforward cartoon by JMP: the NUCC is depicted as an elderly snail.

First, what is the NUCC? The National Unity Consultative Council is an advisory body associated with the National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar, formed in response to the 2021 military coup. Comprised of a diverse coalition including the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), ethnic armed organizations, and ethnic-based consultative councils, the NUCC aims to unite various political institutions and build a federal democratic union in Myanmar through collective leadership, political dialogue, and coordination. It serves as a platform for inclusive representation and advocates for the restoration of civilian rule, human rights, and the aspirations of the people of Myanmar.

JMP's choice of a snail, known for its slow and deliberate movement, implies a critique of the NUCC's perceived lack of effectiveness or inefficiency in bringing about change in Myanmar. The cartoon suggests that the organization is moving too slowly and is ineffective in its efforts to combat the military regime and establish a democratic system.

By highlighting the snail's slowness, JMP is portraying the organization as ineffectual or incapable of fulfilling the expectations of the people of Myanmar. Similarly, by making the snail elderly, he is likely referring to the older leadership who refuses to step aside for younger activists.

Still, for many, the NUCC represents the only glimmer of hope amidst the challenging circumstances faced by the people of Myanmar. As the country grapples with the aftermath of the military coup, the NUCC offers a platform for collective leadership and political dialogue. While it is disheartening that the people of Myanmar are left relying on such limited options, the NUCC strives to unite diverse political institutions and advocate for the restoration of civilian rule and the realization of democratic aspirations. And JMP strives to impart his frustration, felt on the part of many, that progress is not coming effectively or fast enough.
