Tragedy in Chin state
The following story was shared by one of our readers in Chin State. He wishes to remain anonymous to protect his safety.
Approximately six months ago, violence and conflict broke out in the Mindat District of Chin State. Military forces began using heavy weapons, forcing the local population to take refuge and hide in fear. The sudden arrival of military columns meant that many people were unable to bring food or other supplies with them, leading to shortages in the refugee camps.
The ethnic groups in Chin State are no strangers to guns, as they are often used for hunting rather than military purposes. However, tragedy struck when a group of about 20 young people, who had fled the war and were searching for food, left the camp to hunt for cattle. When they did not return by the evening, others from the camp went out to look for them. Along the way, they encountered a Burmese army column that questioned the group and did not believe their explanation that they were hunting. As a result, the army fired on them, killing 18 of the youths and severely injuring two others. When the adults in the camp went to look for their loved ones, they were devastated to find only lifeless bodies.
It is deeply painful to see such violence and loss of life, and it is even more distressing when the world does not offer help or support. It is important for all parties involved to protect civilians from harm. Those who violate international humanitarian law or human rights must be held accountable, and those affected by such actions must have access to justice and reparations.
