Metta in Mandalay: Masoyein Monks Make a Statement
The Peace Sangha Union shares how monks at Masoyein monastery in Mandalay chanted the Metta Sutta yesterday, doing so on the very spot where young peaceful protesters were shot dead by military terrorists.
This is a powerful display not only of non-violent protest, but doing so in a way that is very appropriate as a member of the Buddhist Sangha. It is also a significant statement to those who suggest that because monks should not be “political,” that they have no role to play in the current crisis.
Here, they use their moral authority, religious knowledge, and spiritual cultivation to engage with wisdom and compassion, all the while showing that they are truly the people’s Sangha at this moment. And they did this with silent courage, knowing full well that their robes will not protect them from the brutal regime.
We say, “Sadhu! Sahdu! Sadhu!”
