Turning Despair into Hope, One Dollar at a Time

Naung Khai IDP Camp is a story of resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. Formed by displaced villagers from WoRiSulain Village, this camp near the Biluchaung River has become a temporary home for 287 households—850 people—including 214 children under the age of 20. After the military burned down a third of their village in 2022, and the fields that once provided their livelihood were flooded by military action, these families have lived in a constant state of displacement and loss. Today, they face mounting debts, hunger, and health crises. The camp leaders have shared their urgent needs with us, and we are doing our best to support them. Your contribution can bring hope to these families, and even a small amount can make a big difference.

The camp leaders have told us that mosquito-borne illnesses are a major concern, particularly for young children whose immune systems are vulnerable. They need 214 mosquito nets to cover every household, at a cost of 32,000 kyat each. At the current exchange rate, this means that just $7 can provide a mosquito net to a family, protecting them from malaria and other diseases. The total amount required to supply all households is $1,522—a small price to ensure the health and safety of 214 children and their families.

Hunger is also a daily struggle in Naung Khai Camp. The camp leaders have asked for help in providing 77 bags of rice, at 100,000 kyat per bag, to ensure that each child in the camp can receive 2kg of rice—enough to make a real difference to their nutrition. Each bag of rice costs just $22, meaning that with a contribution of $22, you could help provide a staple food source for several children. The total cost for the rice is $1,711, an amount that can supply all 214 children in the camp with enough rice to support their nutritional needs.

For families that have nothing left, even basic cooking oil is a luxury. The camp leaders have requested 214 bottles of cooking oil, one per household, to support cooking and nutrition. Each bottle costs 12,000 kyat, or just $2.67. The total cost to provide cooking oil to all families comes to $571. Even a small contribution can ensure that a mother has the means to prepare a simple meal for her children.

The total cost of this intervention is 17,116,000 kyat, which comes out to approximately $3,804. With this amount, we can ensure that all 287 households in Naung Khai Camp have mosquito nets, rice, and cooking oil—basic necessities that will go a long way in improving their health, nutrition, and hope for the future.

Your donation doesn’t have to be large to make a difference.

Just $7 provides a mosquito net to protect a family from deadly mosquito-borne diseases. With $22, you can purchase a bag of rice, helping to feed several children for days. And for just $2.67, you can supply a bottle of cooking oil, enabling a family to cook their food.

These small acts of generosity can have a profound impact, especially when multiplied by many kind hearts coming together.

The people of Naung Khai Camp have endured so much over the past three years. From the devastation of losing their homes to the continuous threat of military violence and the loss of their farming livelihoods, these families are in desperate need of support. By contributing to this effort, you can help reduce their financial burdens, protect their health, and restore a sense of stability to their lives.
