Shelter from the Storm in Mizoram

Recently, a devastating typhoon struck Mizoram State in India, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Among the hardest hit were the Chin refugee camps, particularly those in Siaha and Lawngtlai Districts. The Lopu camp in Siaha District suffered severe damage, and the typhoon also wreaked havoc on two schools and communal churches, critical centers of education and community life.

The refugees who lost their homes now find themselves crowded into the few remaining dwellings, struggling to find enough space to eat and sleep. Basic household items and water vessels were also damaged, making daily life even more challenging. The majority of these refugees hail from Matupi and Paletwa townships in Chin State. They have been living in the camp for more than two years, having fled from the intimidation and violence of the State Administration Council (SAC) in Myanmar.

Their journey to Mizoram was fraught with hardship. Arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs, they settled into makeshift shelters constructed from bamboo and bamboo leaves. These temporary structures were only meant to last two to three years, and the recent typhoon has pushed them beyond their limits. The refugees have relied heavily on donations and the limited support of the host community, which has strongly opposed any form of business activity within the camp. This opposition has made it difficult for families to sustain themselves independently.

Recent correspondence with the refugee committee reveals a dire situation. There have been no new donations or assistance, and the refugees are in desperate need of food, funds for reconstruction, and medical treatment for flu and malaria. The conditions are harsh, and the lack of resources is pushing these resilient individuals to the brink.

Your donations are crucial in helping us provide the necessary aid to the Chin refugees in Mizoram. The funds will be used to purchase food, rebuild homes, and provide medical treatment for flu and malaria. Your generosity can bring hope and relief to these vulnerable individuals. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a significant impact. Together, we can help rebuild lives and restore dignity to those who have lost so much. Thank you for your understanding and support.
