Nutritional Relief for Vulnerable Communities: Providing Rice for Elderly and Disabled IDPs
Those have been following our account have read our work in supporting the KayahLi Phu Youth group in Kayah state, as well as learning about their longstanding work in the Kayah community and the important role they’ve been playing since the 2021 military coup. After a recent survey, they have shared the following information with us, requesting urgent support for members of their community who are at risk. We are designating Better Burma funds to support them, but we would like to be able to meet their full needs at this time. Addressing the nutritional needs of the elderly and people with disabilities in IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps has emerged as a critical challenge. While the IDP camp committee provides some food support, it is insufficient to meet the monthly needs of this vulnerable people, and so we are asking for support in meeting these requirements.
Based on the most recent IDP data update, there are 2,488 households comprising a total of 11,456 individuals. This population includes 5,765 males and 5,691 females, with 833 individuals categorized as elderly and 74 identified as people with disabilities. These individuals are spread across three village tracts in East Loikaw.
Among these village tracts, one particular tract is not only significantly affected by the ongoing conflict but also by the scarcity of livelihood opportunities. Recognizing this urgent need, a targeted intervention has been put into action. Specifically, a group of 40 individuals from villages in one area of the study, encompassing both the elderly and people with disabilities, have been selected as beneficiaries for rice distribution program. The objective of this initiative is to provide them with a sufficient quantity of rice to meet their primary food requirements for one month. This step is a vital response to alleviate the immediate nutritional concerns of these vulnerable community members.
To address the nutritional requirements of the elderly and individuals with disabilities, the program figure out a plan to provide each of those 40 most vulnerable persons with a rice basket (weight equivalent to 10 kg), sufficient to meet their dietary needs for one month. The estimated cost for this initiative is approximately 1,200,000 Kyats, 500$ which will cover the procurement of 15 bags of rice, totaling 600 kg in weight. Distribution is scheduled to start in October, upon the approval of the funding. This intervention aims to provide essential food to these vulnerable individuals and is a vital step in supporting their well-being.
Throughout distribution process, KayahLi Phu Youth will use monitoring tools to oversee every aspect of aid delivery, from logistics to beneficiary verification. KayahLi Phu Youth also will maintain close monitoring of rice distribution, ensuring the rice reaches the intended beneficiaries as planned and meets the expected quality standards.
