A Growing Thirst
As if things couldn’t be more serious in Myanmar, this summer also happens to be one of the hotter ones on record. Combined with the failure of the electrical grid (a topic we devoted a full podcast episode to recently), we are finding that more and more towns are in dire need of water. Following is the donation request from our local team leader:
“I want to share that during my recent travels to various monasteries in Bago, Yangon and the Sagaing Hills, I found many monasteries and nunneries are now facing acute water shortages, due to the nation-wide limitation of electricity. The weather in most of the areas across Myanmar is terribly hot as people and monastics are really suffering from both extreme heat/temperature and shortage of water (drinking and household). It's not only due to the heat/temperature or weather but also due to the shortage of electricity. I met the elder Sayadaws of different monastic communities who appealed to me if I could help out with this issue, and also met with their local rescue teams who are trying to help the rural and urban monastics as their best. This is why, I would like to humbly request you if donors might be able to provide any funds which can support providing water for the monastics of our country. If we have the appropriate resources, let us design a program that include arranging/hiring water tankers, electric generators, working with trusted Sayadaws, supporting fuel for the said supply machinery, etc.
Thank you for all your support for the monastics in our country. Sādhu. Sādhu. Sādhu for all your Dhamma-pujā (insight offering) and Āmissa-pujā (material offering).”
