Making a Difference: Empowering Burma Through Humanitarian Initiatives

Better Burma is dedicated to advancing a free, peaceful and prosperous Burma. Our funds have gone towards: sending medical supplies, food, clean water, shelter, and other basic necessities to IDP and refugee camps; support for the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and military defectors; COVID relief; educational projects; and community assistance programs for displaced villagers.

The following are recent examples of our humanitarian projects:

In Mizoram State in India, there are many Chin refugee children who have fled to camps across the border to escape the violence wrought by the Burmese military. The plight of these children is heart-wrenching. They have experienced displacement, insecurity and uncertainty, and all at such a young age. But while refugee camps do offer a safe haven from the violence, they often lack basic amenities and resources; access to education, healthcare, and proper nutrition is limited, which further impacts the physical and mental well-being of the children. We believe that educational opportunity plays a crucial role in helping these children find a better future. An education not only provides knowledge and skills, but also stability, normalcy and hope. Towards this end, Better Burma is sponsoring a wide-ranging initiative. Besides purchasing educational materials, we are overseeing a project to complete a total of eight schools in the Mizoram camps, which will be able to provide an education for over 800 refugee children! By investing in education and providing educational spaces, we aim to help the Chin refugee children, grow, develop, and contribute positively to society.

Another Better Burma project is our collaboration with Healing Hands, an organization that provides essential medical supplies across the Sagaing Division. Access to clean water and sanitation facilities is limited in there, and one initiative in this joint project is the purchase and distribution of deworming tablets, which are crucial in preventing parasitic infections and promote better health among village children. Better Burma has also been assisting Healing Hands in offering vital medical training programs in Sagaing’s rural communities. Because it is very challenging to bring professional medical personnel to rural areas, Healing Hands has developed training courses for local volunteers, which teach how to provide basic medical care and first aid. To date, 150 individuals have graduated from their program. Healing Hands has also established and stocked basic medical stations throughout the Sagaing region, managed by these graduates. By providing relief and equipping local communities with essential medical skills, Healing Hands plays a crucial role in meeting the pressing medical needs in the region affected due to the miltary’s violence and oppression.  Better Burma is honored to be able to play a role in this important work!

Another area in which Better Burma has been active in supporting Burma’s monastic communities. Monks and nuns have become victims of arrests, torture, and even death. Yet despite these adversities, monastic schools have emerged as beacons of hope, providing free education, accommodation, and meals to impoverished children. These monastic charity schools offer inclusive spaces for children from all backgrounds and religions to learn a standard curriculum. Better Burma helps monastic schools’ identify their most urgent needs, and provides them resources such as stationery items and personal hygiene products. By assisting these schools, Better Burma helps ensure that needy children receive an education, fostering the chance for a brighter future for them.

Better Burma is deeply committed to supporting those in Burma who are suffering under the military coup. By actively engaging in a wide range of humanitarian projects such as those described above, Better Burma strives to make a meaningful difference and contribute to a free, peaceful, and prosperous Burma.

We couldn't have done any of this without the incredible support of our donors! Your generosity and compassion have allowed us to carry out vital humanitarian projects and make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. However, the need for assistance in Burma remains urgent, and we are reaching out to our followers to consider making a donation. Your support will help us continue our work to provide essential supplies, education, and medical assistance to displaced individuals, refugees, and vulnerable communities. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those who need it most! Every donation, no matter the size, can make a significant impact on the lives of people in Burma. Thank you for your consideration and support.
