Eat at the New Moon Cooperative Cafe!
If you ever find your way to Olympia, Washington, we encourage all allies of the democracy movement in Myanmar to find your way to the New Moon Coop Cafe. As you enjoy their delicious food, on the walls you’ll find inspiring protest art from Myanmar, which the owner purchased from the Artists Against Tyranny Art Auction. On their instagram account, they write:
Today some of our workers hung up art that newmoon bought from an art auction put on by Better Burma. These prints were made by Burmese artists who are creating art as a sign of resistance. When you come in to eat at our cafe, take a look at these pieces and think about what you can do to support Burmese refugees and the struggle in Myanmar.
Beyond simply purchasing art for a good cause and sharing that with all who come in to eat, the good folks at New Moon are also working with Better Burma to organize future fundraising activities for Myanmar. It is perhaps not a surprise that a cafe with such a progressive mission would support the democracy movement half a world away as strongly as they are. In their own words, the cafe website writes: “Our objective was to create a non-hierarchical working environment that was in itself a sustainable business. Today, the collective continues to run the New Moon Cooperative Cafe and continues its mission of democracy in the workplace and anti-oppression. We are constantly navigating, developing, and integrating sustainable business practices and constructive collective policies as often as is sensible.”
So if you’re anywhere in the area, we encourage you to check out their lovely shop, taste their home-cooked meals, and express your support for how they have taken a stand to help those far away.
