Protective Helmets
Dear Donors, we are using part of your donation to purchase protective helmets for nonviolent protesters who operate on the front lines. This is the most courageous, and most dangerous job there is today. When the military comes storming towards the barricades, these guys must use their makeshift shields to hold back soldiers for as long as possible so as many as possible from the crowd behind them can safely escape, doing so with no thought for their own safety.
The helmets are not cheap, but they are the best protection available. However, they are not without their drawbacks, as a ballistics expert informed us. They can stop pistol rounds, limit blunt force to the head, and slow buckshot, but they cannot keep one safe from shotgun slugs. Some bullets can be deflected only if shot at a steep angle. Still, this is the helmet worn today by UN troops, and a more modern form has been adapted by American soldiers. Except for highly protective helmets made available only to special forces unit, this is the best thing on the market.
Even with bullet proof jackets, shields, helmets, and gasmasks, we have to be honest that there is no real way to totally prevent professional soldiers who are trained in how to effectively kill, and given the order to do so. While all of these items surely save lives, there is no equipment or resources we can possibly provide that will ensure that anyone can stay alive today in Myanmar.
