A Visit to Golden Rock
Golden Rock is one of Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites. It is located in the town of Kinpun, about 3 hours north of Yangon by car. The best way to reach Golden Rock is to take a bus or taxi from Yangon. The journey takes about 3 hours and costs around $30. Once you arrive in Kinpun, you will need to take a short bus or taxi ride to the base of the mountain. From there, it is a 1.5 hour hike to the top. It is advisable to start your hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
There are several accommodation options at the top of the mountain, ranging from simple guesthouses to more luxurious hotels. There are also a few restaurants and cafes. You should budget for around $50 per day for food and accommodation.
Golden Rock is most famous for its unique rock formation, which appears to balancing precariously on the edge of the cliff. The rock is said to be held in place by a single strand of the Buddha's hair. Golden Rock is a very popular pilgrimage site and can get very crowded, especially during peak season (November to February). It is advisable to visit during the week to avoid the crowds.
There are numerous temples and shrines to explore around Golden Rock. The most important temple is the Shwe Dagon Pagoda, which is located at the base of the mountain. This temple is said to contain a relic of the Buddha. Other notable temples include the Hsu Taung Pyae Pagoda and the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda.
A visit to Golden Rock is not complete without taking a sunset stroll along the U Bein Bridge. This 1.2 kilometer long bridge is made entirely of teak and is the longest of its kind in the world. It is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset over the lake.
