Political Prisoners Aid Report

Political prisoners in Myanmar continue to endure extreme, inhumane conditions as the crisis deepens. Overcrowded prisons, insufficient access to food, and severe restrictions on communication leave many prisoners vulnerable to illness and malnutrition. Reports indicate that daily rations are minimal and far from adequate to meet the prisoners' nutritional needs, further worsening their already fragile health.

The psychological toll on these prisoners is immense. Isolated from their families and deprived of any outside support, many suffer from anxiety and depression, compounded by the uncertainty of their detainment. Those who attempt to deliver aid are often labeled as traitors by the regime and face arrest, making the act of helping a dangerous yet essential endeavor.

We are happy to report that we supported a local team who successfully delivered essential supplies to over 38 political prisoners this month, thanks to the continued support of generous donors. The aid provided critical relief, addressing both the physical and emotional needs of these prisoners.

These included food items such as noodles, rice noodles, coffee, tea leaf salad, chicken seasoning powder, cookies, and traditional snacks like Nant Ka Tine. Additionally, a special order of fried fish and shrimp paste was provided, offering a sense of comfort and familiarity to the prisoners. To support their hygiene needs, the delivery also included toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, washing soap, and shampoo. Furthermore, clothing was distributed, including locally made blouses, trousers, and underwear, ensuring the prisoners had basic essentials to maintain their dignity. Finally, transportation costs were covered to ensure the timely delivery of these critical supplies. Following is a more detailed report as to the rationale behind each item and its need for the prisoners:

Nutritional Support: With food supplies in prisons being extremely limited, our provision of noodles, rice, coffee, and traditional snacks helped ensure that prisoners received the necessary calories to maintain their health and strength, crucial for surviving the harsh environment.

Hygiene Maintenance: The distribution of hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste, and shampoo was critical for preventing illness and maintaining cleanliness in overcrowded and unsanitary facilities, where hygiene is often neglected.

Clothing: The provision of blouses, trousers, and underwear offered much-needed comfort and warmth. Many prisoners lack even basic clothing, making these items essential for both physical and emotional well-being.

Emotional and Moral Support: Beyond the tangible benefits, the continued delivery of aid sends a powerful message to these prisoners—that they are not forgotten. This emotional lifeline offers hope and resilience, reminding them that the world stands with them in solidarity.

In conclusion, Better Burma remains fully committed to this cause, and with the continued support of our donors, we will strive to provide ongoing aid to those who need it most. Together, we can ensure that these political prisoners are not forgotten, and that their hope is kept alive, even in the darkest of times.
